Sir Richard Branson was born on July 18 1950. He is an English businessman and investor. He is the founder of Virgin Group, which consists of more than 400 companies. Richard Branson began his entrepreneurial journey at the age of sixteen by establishing his first business which was a magazine called Student. In 1970, he set up a mail-order record business. In 1972, he opened a chain of record stores, Virgin Records, later known as Virgin Megastores. Branson’s Virgin brand grew rapidly during the 1980s, as he set up Virgin Atlantic and expanded the Virgin Records music label.

Branson formed Virgin Atlantic Airways in 1984, launched Virgin Mobile in 1999, and Virgin Blue in Australia (now named Virgin Australia) in 2000. Richard Branson also formed businesses relating to rail (Virgin Trains), beverages (Virgin Cola), alcoholic brands (Virgin Vodka), telecommunications (Virgin Mobile), cheaper fuel (Virgin Fuels), comics (Virgin Comics) and a host of others. Richard Branson also set up a now defunct National Carrier in Nigeria called Virgin Nigeria. Remember it?
In 2004, he started a space tourism venture called Virgin Galactic. He intends to take paying passengers into suborbital space. Virgin Galactic (wholly owned by Virgin Group) plans to make flights available to the public with tickets priced at US$200,000 using Scaled Composites White Knight Two.

Richard Branson also has an entrepreneurship school operating in South Africa and Jamaica called the Branson Centre for Entrepreneurship which seeks to guide and mentor young entrepreneurs through a peer and partnership network. He has a word of advice for entrepreneurs struggling with their enterprise, “Don’t worry if you are going through some tough times and fearing the worst, I guarantee you are not the only one feeling that way—I know I have in the past. The day after we launched Virgin Atlantic, the bank manager came to my house and threatened to shut us down. I pushed him out the front door and called my team to try and work out a way of solving this problem together. It was a very sweaty moment.”
On 21 September 2006, Branson pledged to invest the profits of Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Trains in research for environmentally friendly fuels. The investment is estimated to be worth $3 billion. In July 2015, Forbes listed Branson’s estimated net worth at US $5 billion.
Richard Branson is a serial entrepreneur, go-getter, environmentalist and a man who has a passion for success, our type of man! Therefore, it is in good order that we make Richard Branson our MCM today!
